This project focused on refreshing the ATM surround and backlit header graphic at FFBKC’s North Kansas City branch. The original design had a vibrant, colorful style that made a strong statement when first installed, but after years of exposure to the elements, certain hues (especially reds and purples) had weathered unevenly. The result was a look that no longer reflected the clean, modern brand presence FFBKC wanted for its customer-facing spaces.
My Approach
From the start, I wanted the redesign to balance three priorities:
Brand consistency – The new artwork needed to tie seamlessly into FFBKC’s existing identity and color palette.
Longevity – The installation had to withstand weathering, fading, and heavy outdoor exposure while aging evenly.
Customer focus – Since the ATM interface is the most important element for users, the surrounding graphics should complement, not compete with, the screen.
Process files including letterform die guides for the backlit ATM sign, as provided to vendor.
The Solution
I extended the Federal Blue spot color used on the backlit ATM header into the full surround as a vertical gradient. The gradient fades into lighter corporate colors, creating a contemporary, cohesive look that makes the header and surround feel like one integrated piece. The solid outline of the pinwheel icon at bottom left gives the First Federal brand a steady presence without overpowering the ATM signage, full bank logo or screen, which should remain the customer’s main focus.

Why Simple Worked Best
In the end, simplicity was the most powerful design choice. A cleaner, less busy gradient background does three key things. It ensures the ATM itself is the visual priority. It provides a more contemporary, polished aesthetic. It extends the lifespan of the design by avoiding colors that fade quickly outdoors.

Installation Notes
Special care was taken during installation by the Dynamic Displays team to ensure durability. The old surface was fully cleaned and recaulked. Caps were applied to cover screw holes, with vinyl color matching to follow. The new panel was sealed to weatherproof the finish.
Result
The updated ATM surround glows with a modern, confident look that strengthens FFBKC’s brand presence at street level—day or night. It’s simple, durable, and designed to serve both the client and their customers for years to come.
